CHROME NOTES

You don’t polish chrome you clean it.

Unlike aluminium or stainless steel, chrome doesn’t oxidise much. But if it’s not cleaned regularly, especially after a shower or wash, watermarks are inevitable. Over time, soap scum and other chemicals can build up and dull the surface. Chrome plating is usually very thin — just a few microns — so care is essential.

Polishes, even expensive ones, won’t remove scratches from chrome. Once scratched, it must be re-chromed — not polished.

CHROME PLATING PROCESS

  1. Copper underlay – acts as a filter

  2. Nickel – provides the mirror finish

  3. Hard chrome – forms the outer protective layer
